Red Bull have lost their lead in the 2024 Constructors’ championship as McLaren claim a huge points haul following the Azerbaijan GP.
A sensational win by Oscar Piastri and a P4 finish from Lando Norris along with the fastest lap point saw McLaren add 38 points to their tally, while a P5 finish for Max Verstappen and a DNF for Sergio Perez saw Red Bull only add 10 points to theirs.
McLaren now lead Red Bull in the Constructors’ standings by 20 points with only seven races left to go in the season. McLaren are no strangers to leading the championship having won it eight times before, although their last Constructors’ title came in 1998 – seven years before Red Bull entered the sport in 2005.
This is however the first time the Woking squad have led the championship since the 2014 Australian Grand Prix, which in itself is a somewhat misleading statistic as this was the first race of the 2014 season. It marks a complete turn around of what we’ve come to expect of the championship order in recent years, as Red Bull have led the order since the Spanish Grand Prix in 2022.
With the end of the season fast approaching, it looks as though we’re in for a tight fight in both the Constructors’ and Driver’s championships – can McLaren hold their lead or can the defending champions, Red Bull, pull it back?
