McLaren have done enough to bring home the biggest trophy in Formula 1 despite Ferrari’s best efforts and a career best recovery drive for Charles Leclerc from P14 to P3. Norris closed out the season in a dominant fashion, holding the lead from lights to flag in the face of chaos behind him.
Piastri had a trickier day after tumbling down the order following turn 1 contact with Max Verstappen, earning Verstappen a 10 second penalty. Piastri wasn’t without a penalty himself though, also receiving 10 seconds for a collision with Franco Colapinto.
Quick pitstops under pressure from the team and a champion’s drive from Norris meant he had an over 5 second margin to Carlos Sainz in P2 by the flag, confirming the title for the papaya squad.
Speaking in parc ferme, Lando Norris reflected that it had been a “perfect” end to the season:
“It feels incredible, it feels incredible not for myself but for the whole team. The team have done an amazing job this year to come from where we were at the beginning. I’m so proud of everyone, it’s been a lovely journey, to end the season like this is perfect.”
“Just a congrats and a big thank you to everyone in McLaren, everyone in papaya, everyone who’s supported us this year because it’s been a tough one. For us to win a constructors’ after 26 years is pretty special.”
Piastri reflected on “a tough night for [him]self” but said “I don’t think much of that matters at the moment.”
“When you look in the context of how we’ve been able to turn around our car and our seasons is pretty impressive.”
McLaren now of course head into 2025 targeting yet another win of the constructors’ but also of going one better and taking the driver’s title, with Piastri summing it up, “we don’t want to wait 26 years for the next one.”
