Alpine secure Mercedes engine deal from 2026

Alpine have announced a deal with Mercedes Benz for 2026, as they shift from a works to customer team under the new regulations.

Last month, Alpine confirmed that they would cease to create their own works engines at their Viry-Chatillon base at the end of 2025 as they move to allocate its resources to their ‘Hypertech’ project.

With this will come an end to the Renault name in F1 and after months of discussion with other manufacturers, Alpine have now secured a multi-year deal with Mercedes to use their power units and gearboxes.

2026 will see a huge shift in the power unit regulations as there will be a 50/50 split between electrical power and the internal combustion engine and a move to use 100% sustainable fuels.

Currently Mercedes supply engines to three customer teams (McLaren, Williams, Aston Martin) and of course their own works team, and in 2026 this number will remain the same with McLaren and Williams already confirmed to have continued their agreements and Alpine taking Aston Martin’s place as they move to be supplied by Honda.

In a statement, the French team said, “The multi-year agreement will see Mercedes-Benz supply BWT Alpine Formula One Team with Power Units for the duration of the new regulation era, from 2026 until at least 2030. Alongside the Power Unit, BWT Alpine Formula One Team will also be supplied with Mercedes gearboxes from the 2026 season.”

Though Alpine had a spectacular double-podium weekend in Brazil pushing them up to sixth in the Constructors’ standings in just one race, they have generally struggled for performance this season with the power unit thought to be a factor behind this.

Despite this, the statement concludes, “The team remains focused on performing in the strongest way possible in the 2024 and 2025 seasons”.
